The hardest person to shop for is the coffee person who already has the gear. They don't want another french press; they have three. They don't want a generic coffee subscription; they pick their own beans. Here's what we've learned, after a couple of seasons of running gift cards and bean orders, about what actually lands.
1. Café Mia gift cards
The most-given gift, because it's the most-flexible. We sell gift cards in any denomination at the counter or by request. Most popular ranges:
- $25 — covers a few drinks. The "thinking of you" amount.
- $50 — a couple of weeks of regular visits. The "good friend" amount.
- $100 — a real gift. Covers brunches and coffee for a month.
Gift cards never expire. Recipients can use them at the counter or against catering and pastry tray orders.
2. A bag of beans + a pourover guide
If you know the recipient brews at home, a 12oz bag of our current rotation paired with a brief pourover guide (we'll write one for you) makes a thoughtful, useful gift. The bag plus a $10 paper filter pack is enough for the recipient to do their own coffee ritual properly.
For matcha drinkers, the equivalent is a 30g tin of our matcha plus a small bamboo whisk (chasen) and a sifter. The whisk is cheap; the matcha is the gift.
3. Pastry tray for a holiday gathering
If the recipient is hosting holiday breakfast or brunch, an order of our pastry tray is a more useful gift than another scarf. 4. The "five mornings" pre-pay
A gift that landed unexpectedly well last year: a customer pre-paid five drinks for a friend who'd just moved to Bushwick. We logged the friend's name and gave them a free drink each morning for a week. The gesture was simple but meaningful — the friend felt welcomed by the neighborhood.

The best coffee gifts are gifts that get used. Gear sits in cabinets. Beans get drunk.
5. Matcha kit for a beginner
For someone curious about matcha but never having committed: a small "starter kit" we put together — 30g tin of ceremonial-grade matcha, a bamboo whisk, a sifter, and a one-page brewing card. It's about $50 and contains everything they need for two months of home matcha.
The kit isn't on our regular menu but we'll assemble one if you ask 24–48 hours ahead.
6. Coffee subscription, the simple version
If you want to sponsor a friend's morning coffee for a few months: pre-pay a fixed amount (e.g., $200) and we'll log it as a credit on their account. They walk in, say their name, and the drinks come out of the credit until it's gone. Simpler than a recurring subscription, and the recipient gets to choose their own drinks.
7. The "dealer's choice" tasting
For a connoisseur friend: pre-pay a $40 "tasting" credit. We'll text them when it's ready and serve them a flight of three preparations of our current rotation — espresso, filter, cold brew of the same bean. Takes about 30 minutes, fits in a Saturday morning.
What not to gift a coffee person
- A french press. They have one.
- Branded mugs from a chain. Specialty coffee people drink from drinkware they chose.
- "Coffee-flavored" anything. Coffee chocolates, coffee soap, coffee-themed socks. Skip.
- Pre-ground bulk grocery-store beans. We say this with love. Don't.
- A coffee maker that does 47 things. The good coffee person uses 1–2 brewing methods. Adding a third is rarely the gift.
